Norman Marriage armoire
from St. Lo, south of Cherbourg. In wonderful condition,
this oak armoire is Louis XIV in form with obviously
then hot off the presses Louis XV motifs. Dates to the
mid 18thC. It has a classic very generous Louis XIV
cornice and fine doors mounted on three pairs of brass
hinges. The door panels are raised and fielded with
lovely triple plumed cartouches decked with flowers.
The then just appearing Louis XV sea shell motif (honest;
that's what its a stylized version of!) appears on the
central door traverse bordered by more flowers. Like
most L.XIV armoires, the bottom traverse and feet are
simple and original. The colour of the oak is excellent
with some good figuring, Rich mid hues rather than dark
and dour. A very old though very functional piece. I
have similar pieces shelved as libraries.
