| c1843 Norman Oak Armoire
From the quaintly named village
of Missy not far from Mont St. Michel. It features
a floral motif based on sunflowers which were then
recently introduced to Norman agriculture. They were
hailed as a fantastic new oil crop but proved unsuitable
for damp Norman climes. The flower design is clearly
based on a modified marguerite (ox-eye daisy) which
they'd been carving for several centuries. The colour
of the oak is lovely; not at all sombre and has survived
167 years in a working farmhouse in fantastic condition.
Warm and folksy decoration on a smart and impressive
corps. We love it.
