Musicians Painted Norman
Marriage Armoire c.1740.
Absolutely superb sculpting here commissioned to celebrate
the marriage
of a professional or gifted amateur musicians wedding
170 years ago.
The carving is as good as it gets. The instruments finely
carved on the
median traverse (err.. sorry; thats the horizontal bar
in the middle of
each door) are genuinely exceptional and have sailed
through the
centuries without blemish. I have never seen another
armoire with these
motifs. It would have represented by far the most costly
and showy
marriage present. The piece is made from oak and in
style reflects the
transitional period between Louis XIV (the 'Sun King"
responsible for
Versailles) and Louis XV (of mistress Madame Pompadour
and baroque
exuberance fame). It is deep enough for hanging and
with an internal
shelf will stow quite a volume. A smart, fine, cheery
armoire.

deep
