For background please read the text assigned to the
doubled domed Rennes armoire.
This piece was from the same farmhouse as the other
Rennes piece but is much earlier. In the early-mid 18thC
Rennes armoires were straight topped (Louis XIV). This
rare piece is possibly the only extant transitional
piece from straight topped Louis XIV to domed Louis
XV (baroque) styles. there is a photograph in the collection
of the Musee National des Arts et Traditions Populaires
of a similar piece photographed in 1941 in a farmhouse.
I have not seen one in over 20 years of looking. It
was built probably c.1760-70. It shows the typical minor
historic repairs of any piece of this age and origin.
Bretons say that the colour of their cherry furniture
improves with age and the smokey nature of traditional
interiors. This cherry is as dark a red as one can find.
Carving is exemplary and fine. It would have been built
for the grandmother or great grandmother of the the
other pieces original owner. It the good citizens of
Rennes weren't feeling so financially uncertain both
pieces would have stayed nearer to home. History aside,
it is a fantastically beautiful and practical piece
of furniture which will be the focal point of any room.
