We find, restore and sell a lot of beds. There are now
quite a lot of people retailing them from trade sources.
The links down the chain and perceived apparent extravagance
of 1880-1900 factory produced pieces seems to conspire to
inflate prices. The best known types, probably easily-recognized
Louis XV and similar, usually cost £499-549; unusually
flamboyant chaps a little more. This compares favourably
with a middle range divan base which it will see off by
a century or more.
Early beds are often beautiful or quaint but small and
usually only one sided (there is a decorative front side,
and a simple side which is not seen as against the wall).
There are few proper full double sizes before 1880. Five
foot widths (king size) are extremely rare and mostly early
20thC. Big lit bateau in any size we build in oak and cherry
- new - with one high, one low end or twin high ended. These
can be antiqued, distressed etc.
