This rather grown-up
bed hails from Flanders and dates from the late 19thC.
The carving is typically fine and generously embellished
typical of the region. The motifs are transitional between
Napoleon III details (c.1860-75) and classic Louis XV
revival flourishes which came to prevail from the 1880s-1900.
It has been beautifully made, well maintained and re-caned
relatively recently. It does not seem to have had any
obvious use since (impressive guest bed?). I can't recall
seeing a similar piece in our first 26 years.
The bedside cabinet was made as a singleton (beds at
this period were against the wall on one side and only
came out into the room around the turn of the century)
and is perfectly charming. It is very unusual to find
a period bed neither stained dark nor painted. Its nice
for us to still be able to find something unique after
all these years.
