Louis XV style Lit Bateau beds.
Beautifully hand carved and traditionally upholstered.
The beds are exact copies of an original we found many
years ago. The family of carvers hail from the Vosges
region of E. France where they have been producing furniture
for at least 250 years i.e. since this model was the
latest thing. It takes about 4 days to produce one frame
from local afforested beech. It then takes one day per
treatment for us to brush stain, oil seal, undercoat,
double top coat and then another day to distress and
patinate the frame. One more day sees the upholstery
added and about half a day to finish adding the final
fabric and braid. That's an awful lot of man hours.
The results are wonderful and look nothing like commercially
produced, machine carved and sprayed offerings.
The bed shown here has been painted in stone and highlighted
in antique white and gold leaf.
