Beautiful
1900's hand carved oak Norman marriage bed and matching
bedside chevet.
The photos don't do this bed justice. the colour is
much better in the flesh and it is much grander and
imposing than it seems here. It was commissioned for
the marriage of a farmer. Norman 19thC farms were akin
to those here; large well run enterprises employing
many workers. Farmers were relatively very wealthy.
The carving in the bed reflects this wealth and its
source. In the tailboard are depicted a scythe and hay
rake. In the chevet (bedside cabinet) are carved wheat
sheaves, a spade and oven paddle (used to slide loaves
into hot giant bread ovens). Other details such as the
garlands of flowers signify fertility for the union.
the carving would have cost the groom far more than
the basic bed frame. Its 5' width is exceptional. It
is a beautiful bed which well relates its history.
