Unique
1900's solid walnut Louis XV Italian bedstead.
Incredibly none of the carving is applied and actually
carved from solid panels of walnut. Huge chunks of timber
would have been used to carve the large detailed bouquets
of flowers and scrolls.
The bed would have been a commission piece manufactured
entirely by hand in a small workshop in the Piedmont
region of northern Italy for a Genoese or Venetian client.
It would have cost a kings ransom. There are chinese
copies of similar beds on the market but this is the
only real example of this size we've seen in the last
25 years. It is that rare.
The bed was originally finished with a natural light
colour to the flat panels and the carved areas picked
out with a darker wood stain to give what would have
been a very striking effect when new. Now mellowed to
a richer more even tone.
