19thC Oak Norman Buffet
From the Caen (Couchoise) region of Normandy comes this
splendid rather
jolly oak buffet. Made for typically a reasonably affluent
farming
family c1860-75, the most exuberant period of Norman
cabinet making.
They were dining room pieces used to display the families
best dinner
service with bulkier tureens etc below. The upper part
is much narrower
than the base and the whole appears relatively light
(none to
voluminous) in the room. The cabinet making is very
fine with the
chapeau de gendarme cornice and curlicues typical of
the Caen region.
They have often been painted in creams or greys and
look very cheerful.
This piece is in medium-light oak which looks great
but could be
painted if required. With the large curlicues and detailing
they look
very theatrical painted;a hint of 19thC toytown which
I love.
