Lovely 19thC Comtoise
clock
From the mid western Pays de la Loire region of France
signed by the maker Guillon from the town of Fontenay-Le-Comte
Pine case painted in walnut wood grain effect and very
pretty colourful flower details.
These longcase clocks were enormously popular amongst
farming folk in
the 19thC. They would often be given as major wedding
gifts.
This one combines simple country posies of flowers with
the ears of wheat on
which the family economy was based. It almost certainly
was commissioned
for a farmers wedding.
Delightfully folksy and entirely original.
Strikes on the hour and just after the hour and on the
half hour.
Measures 89.5" tall
£795
