Beautiful early 19th century Breton armoire from the north west region of Tregunc, Finistere
Naive folk hand carved panels, stylised birds, flowers and symbols.
The wheels in the bottom panels are apotropaic symbols, these protective marks, sometimes called witches marks, warded off evil spirits, demons, witches and fairy folk!
Dated 1826 with the family name of Borgne.
Also the traditional decoration of brass studs. these were added to twinkle in the candlelight in the very dark cottage interiors.
