Early 19th Century Chestnut Armoire from Sizun. A commune in the Finistère department of north western Brittany.
Particularly fine hand carved apotropaic symbols all over. These protective marks, sometimes called witch marks, warded off unwanted evil spirits, demons, witches and fairy folk! Dated 1817, though the naive folk style is more early 18th century. Dry unwaxed finish. Fitted with a single shelf and hanging rail inside.
Measures 130 cm wide down the main part (150 cm including cornice)
